Taylor Swift’s Tribute to Travis Kelce Included Secret Nod to Patrick Mahomes
During the final night of Taylor Swift’s “Eras” tour stop in Amsterdam, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany Mahomes, joined Travis Kelce in the audience.
In front of the sold-out show at the Johan Cruijff Arena on July 6, Swift surprised fans by playing an all-new mashup of Mary’s Song,” “So High School” and “Everything Has Changed.” The inclusion of her track, “Mary’s song,” immediately turned heads, as it closes with the following lyrics:
“I’ll by 87, you’ll be 89. I’ll still look at you like the stars that shine. In the sky, oh my my my.”
While fans gushed over how lyrics from her 2006 self-titled album included Kelce’s jersey number, the singer’s decision to wait to play the song while Mahomes was in the audience was not lost on Swifties.
Kelce first attended Swift’s show in Kansas City last year, after which the tight end famously lamented not giving the 14-time Grammy winner a friendship bracelet with his number on it. Swift heard the shout-out on his “New Heights” podcast and their storybook romance commenced.
However, Kelce would never have attended that “Eras” show if it wasn’t for Mahomes.
Swift could’ve played her new three-song mashup, which appeared to bring Kelce to tears, during any of the numerous shows he’s attended since they first started dating. However, she waited until Mahomes was in the audience, commemorating the one-year anniversary of that fateful night in Kansas City.
The three-time Super Bowl MVP explained on “The Pat McAfee Show” in May, “I was the one who invited Travis to the first Taylor concert when the friendship bracelet was — he was sitting in my suite — so I feel like I was the matchmaker.”
