Meghan Markle surprised by Suits’ resurgence
Meghan Markle has reportedly earned a substantial six-figure sum from the global sale of her TV drama Suits, as revealed by The Mail on Sunday.
Despite concluding in 2019, the series has seen a remarkable resurgence on Netflix, securing distribution in over 240 territories worldwide.
This resurgence has resulted in repeat fees that have contributed to significant earnings for its cast, including Meghan Markle.
NBCUniversal, managing the series’ sales, has not disclosed specific royalty details, but estimates suggest the Duchess of Sussex could have earned nearly $200,000 (£155,000) from Netflix alone.
This income is in addition to what she earned per episode during her tenure as fiery paralegal Rachel Zane from 2011 to 2017, when she departed the show upon her engagement to Prince Harry.
Rather than fading into obscurity, Suits made headlines in 2023 for its exceptional performance on Netflix and Peacock, becoming the most-streamed show of the year and dominating charts for 12 consecutive weeks.
She has potentially earned a substantial sum from the resurgence of her TV drama Suits, following its surprise success on streaming platforms like Netflix.
The BBC recently secured UK rights for iPlayer, reportedly outbidding ITV for the deal, although the financial details remain undisclosed, including any potential earnings for the Duchess.
When asked about the show’s unexpected popularity last year, Meghan described it as ‘wild’, expressing surprise over its renewed popularity.
According to NBC sources, principal performers such as Meghan receive royalties, known as ‘residuals’, from global sales.
Estimates from media sources suggest that Netflix paid approximately $37.5 million (£29.5 million) to license Suits, with actors potentially earning a percentage of this amount.
