King Charles took a moment to reflect on the royal family’s close connection with Scotland today and offered a rare bit of insight into the machinations of the notoriously private family as he spoke about the passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth. The U.K.’s longest-reigning monarch passed away at the family’s Balmoral Estate in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, on September 8, 2022, at age 96—and Charles spoke about how she wanted to spend her final days at one of the places she loved the most
Speaking from a personal perspective, Scotland has always had a uniquely special place in the hearts of my family and myself,” Charles shared at the opening of the Scottish Parliament on September 30. “My late mother especially treasured the time spent at Balmoral, and it was there, in the most beloved of places, where she chose to spend her final days.”
Charles’s sister, Princess Anne, also spoke about Elizabeth’s decision to plan her last days, going against the wishes of her family.
