Sofia Vergara went from playing Colombian bombshell in ‘Modern Family’ to Colombian drug lord in ‘Griselda’

Sofia Vergara always had her eyes set on bigger goals in Hollywood beyond typecast Latina comedy roles, and the massive success of her Netflix show Griselda has only fueled her hunger for more.

Despite the success of her critically-acclaimed role of Colombian bombshell Gloria Pritchett on Modern Family, a new report by In Touch Weekly revealed that 51-year-old actress is determined to boost both her net worth and her “power” in the entertainment industry.

An insider told the outlet, “Griselda is the culmination of something Sofia has been pushing toward for years and years in that it’s finally broken her out of the comedy space, where her attractiveness and distinct accent was used primarily as shallow punchlines and now, overnight practically, she’s this capable, insanely watchable dramatic powerhouse.”

The source continued to note how Vergara’s “longtime focus on Latin-themed productions where she can honor her heritage continues to pay off and then some.”

Vergara – who portrayed the Colombian druglord Griselda Blanco on the hit Netflix series – has indeed worked hard for Latin representation. She co-founded and co-owns Latin World Entertainment, a management company specialising in Latin talent.

Previously, the Emmy-nominated actress expressed to People Magazine her desire to “make people forget about Gloria [Pritchett from Modern Family].”
