World No.3 Coco Gauff won in under an hour on Monday (27 May) in her Roland-Garros opener, beating qualifier Julia Avdeeva in just 52 minutes, 6-1 6-1.

It marked a 50th career Grand Slam win for the 20-year-old American, less than five years after her breakout run at Wimbledon in 2019.

Gauff will meet another qualifier in Tamara Zidansek in the second round. Australian Open semi-finalist Dayana Yastremska could loom in round three.

Gauff lost just one of 24 points played on her first serve, winning five of eight break points and never facing one on her own serve. She hit 10 winners in the match on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

“This is one of the tournaments I consistently play my best at,” Gauff told the TODAY Show on Friday (24 May). “I have unfinished business on the court.”

“I’m super excited to be able to compete” at Paris 2024, she added about the coming Olympic Games, which will see tennis held at Stade Roland-Garros. “I couldn’t think of a better city to compete in.”

Gauff made her first major final in Paris in 2022 before making a semi-final run a year ago, losing to Iga Swiatek both times.
