The young American star will have to read 24 books in 12 months: who will win the challenge?

Coco Gauff took revenge on Ekaterina Alexandrova, despite at the on-court interview the young American didn’t remember that – just a year ago – it was the Russian who eliminated her from the same tournament! This time the young American star prevailed, defeating her rival 7-6 (6) 6-2, qualifying for the quarterfinals of the WTA Berlin tournament. Last year, Gauff began her run in Berlin with a straight-sets win over Katerina Siniakova before Alexandrova handed her a 6-4 6-0 defeat in the round of 16.

The 20-year-old American was asked if she had in mind the defeat she suffered last year in Berlin against the Russian.

“Did the match you play against her here last year, in the same place, stick in your mind or go away? Did I play her here last year? I don’t remember! I didn’t remember, so obviously I didn’t think about it. I’m a different player than last year. She’s a fantastic player to play with her, especially on grass … she usually wins a couple of titles on grass, so I knew today she was going to be tough,” she told her, to the amusement of the crowd.

Meanwhile, the young American responded to her boyfriend’s challenge. This is the book challenge, which involves reading 24 books in 12 months. Gauff explained that she is two books ahead.

“When he said he would read 24, I got super competitive and doubled my goal to match his and I like trying to finish faster than him. I’m two books ahead, so I’m winning right now. The challenge is on because I loved reading as a kid and I kind of lost that as I got older. So at first my goal was to read 12 books, one a month. Then my boyfriend has this thing where he reads the amount of books in the year we are in, so 24 in 2024, 23 in 2023!” she told.
