Coach Brad Gilbert criticizes Paula Badosa’s serving tactics following Coco Gauff’s victory

Coco Gauff’s coach, Brad Gilbert, expressed strong disapproval of Paula Badosa’s serving conduct after Gauff triumphed over the Spaniard in the last-16 of the Italian Open. The American, seeded No. 3, emerged victorious in a challenging match in Rome, securing a 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 win. This victory set her up for a quarter-final clash with Chinese player Qinwen Zheng.

Gauff, who clinched her maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open last year, continues to impress on the court. However, Gilbert was less pleased with the behavior of Badosa during the match, particularly her frequent ball tosses while serving. Taking to social media, Gilbert vented his frustrations.

“You have heard me say this so many times, catching your own ball toss on serve should not be allowed,” Gilbert posted on X. “How can you catch three tosses in a row and not at least get a time violation is beyond ridiculous.” He further emphasized the need for stricter enforcement of rules regarding service delays, adding, “Also allowing 45 catches in a match and nothing in rules is mind boggling and such disadvantage to returner.”

Gilbert’s remarks sparked considerable backlash online. Many fans suggested that he should concentrate on addressing the shortcomings in Gauff’s own game, pointing out her 11 double faults during the match. One user, @Susana_Olll, criticized Gilbert for his public outburst, stating, “Coaching a professional player and coming here with comments about her opponents shouldn’t be allowed either!”

Despite the controversy stirred by her coach, Gauff has been making headlines for more than just her on-court performance. In a press conference, she weighed in on the ongoing feud between rappers Drake and Kendrick Lamar, siding with Lamar. “As far as the rap battle is going on, the rap beef, I think definitely Kendrick’s winning,” Gauff remarked. “Also, Drake dissed Serena, so I have to go with Kendrick. Kendrick defended her, so yeah, I have to go with him.”

Gauff’s blend of athletic prowess and candid opinions continues to capture public attention as she progresses in the Italian Open.
