WIMBLEDON: ‘IT’S VERY UNFORTUNATE’ – COCO GAUFF REACTS TO BIG-NAME WITHDRAWALS IN DRAW AFTER CONVINCING WIN

Second seed Coco Gauff was in dominant form once more as she swept past Anca Todoni in straight sets, 6-2 6-1, in just one hour and six minutes. The American again demonstrated why she is one of the hot favourites to claim the Wimbledon title next Saturday with a commanding performance against the 19-year-old from Romania. Afterwards, she gave her reaction to a number of big names withdrawing.

It was another convincing victory for Coco Gauff at Wimbledon on Wednesday as she overcame Anca Todoni in straight sets on Centre Court.
The 20-year-old, who lost to compatriot Sofia Kenin in the opening round last year and is looking to make a big impact at the All England Club this time around, has looked in sparkling form so far as she recorded another strong showing.

Gauff is chasing another Grand Slam title after she triumphed at the US Open last year, and she was left very pleased with her performance against Todoni.

“I’m happy with how I played, I do think I could have played cleaner in some moments, but overall I’m happy to get through to the third round,” she said.
Asked about any added pressure on her after her US Open crown, she said: “Overall, I just learnt about life a lot. What I do, I’m very passionate about, but it’s not ever that serious. It’s a game, it’s sport.
“Sometimes the world can make you feel like there is so much pressure and expectation. I’m very privileged and honoured to be playing out here in front of you guys.

“This is the first court I played on at Wimbledon, so Court One is always a special place for me to play on.”

Gauff said it was “very unfortunate” that players such as Aryna Sabalenka have had to withdraw from the tournament through injury, but she explained that she does not focus on her route to the latter stages.
“I never look at the draws, I only pay attention to who I play in the first and then the next match,” she said. “At the end of the day, you have to get through that before you play the next.
“Obviously, I know about some of the withdrawals that have happened, and it’s very unfortunate, and it’s a long season, so I wish all the players who had to withdraw to be back soon.”
