During a wide-ranging and personal speech delivered to Republican lawmakers in Washington on January 6, President Trump shared a lighthearted but revealing anecdote that quickly attracted media attention. According to the president, First Lady Melania Trump “hates” it when he dances in public, believing that such behavior does not align with what a president should look like.
“My wife hates when I do this,” Trump said, drawing laughter from the audience. “She’s very elegant, right? And she says, ‘That doesn’t look like a president.’”
According to Trump, the exchange between the couple was both candid and humorous. Responding to his wife’s criticism, the president said he replied confidently: “But I still became president.”
Over the years, Donald Trump’s habit of ending speeches with impromptu dance moves set to the song “YMCA” has become something of a personal trademark. The routine typically involves rhythmic, deliberate arm movements while his lower body remains mostly stationary.
For Trump supporters, these moments are seen as playful, relatable, and emblematic of his unconventional style. At rallies and events, crowds often erupt in cheers when Trump begins to dance, treating it as an anticipated and entertaining conclusion to his appearances.
From Melania Trump’s perspective, however, such performances appear to clash with her vision of presidential decorum. Known for her reserved demeanor and refined sense of style, the First Lady has long emphasized grace, restraint, and formality in public appearances.
“She says it’s not presidential,” Trump told Republican lawmakers, underscoring his wife’s concern with maintaining a dignified image befitting the office.
Notably, First Lady Melania Trump was not present at the event where the president shared the story.
In recounting the conversation, Trump said his wife went so far as to compare his behavior to that of previous presidents.
“I told her everyone wants me to dance,” Trump said. “And she said, ‘Can you imagine Franklin D. Roosevelt dancing?’”
Franklin Delano Roosevelt (commonly known as FDR) remains one of the most respected figures in American presidential history.
